Obituary of Marjory M. Laymond

Marjory M. Laymond, 85, died Septebber 17, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Colonie, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles Sterling and Marion Brind Sterling. Marjory lived in the East Greenbush/Schodack area for most of her life. In the 1950s, she worked as a model for Albany's downtown department stores such as Flah's and others and participated in fashion shows at the Palace Theatre. From 1952-58 she worked in the office of O'Hanlon Investigations. After her children were born, she devoted herself to being a full-time mom. Marjory was very involved in her community and used her artistic talents to help decorate events such as Columbia High School's annual Pops Concerts, the East Greenbush Bicentennial Ball and parades, advertising signs for the East Greenbush Little League, and signs and decorative musical "monsters" for her daughter's Magic of Music Studio. She also wrote and illustrated a children's book for her granddaughter titled There Goes Katie in a Rocketship. She also chronicled a book of stories about the history of her childhood hometown, the Village of Colonie, NY. She served as a Sunday school teacher of preschoolers and kindergarteners for 17 years at the East Greenbush First United Methodist Church. Her work with children often extended beyond the Sunday school. She worked with the Albany United Methodist Society's children's tutoring ministry; led her students in adopting an elderly member of the congregation and raising funds for her custom wheel chair. For 10 years ran a children's' "mini-bazaar" to help children discover the joy of giving. Over 900 children participated in her last bazaar. In the 70s, she served as President of the East Greenbush First United Methodist Church's Woman's Society and was active in the East Greenbush Music Parents Association. Marjory was an avid gardener and enjoyed photographing all the wildlife that frequented her feeders including deer, fox, birds, raccoons, hedge hogs, turkeys and even a mother bear and her cubs! She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved and supported her children and grand-daughters and always welcomed a houseful of their friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Robert F. Laymond who was her childhood sweetheart, and her brothers and sister, Charles, Robert and Coralie Sterling. She is survived by her son Randy Laymond who served for many years as her caretaker, her daughter Dawn Laymond Kolakoski and her husband Charles Raderstorf, and her two grand-daughters Kathryn McBain (Jaime) and Rebecca Kolakoski. She leaves behind ten nieces and nephews, whom she adored-- Linda Lachanski, Jill Keyrouze, Gail Ferris, Gary Sterling, Mary Harvazinski, Peggy Powers, Susan DeCota, Steven Cox, and Mark and Bruce Sterling and their families. She also leaves behind her dear friend, Eddie Kilgallon whom she described as a "son to me since he was 8-years-old" and Robert Hall as "the best friend she's ever had." The family is most appreciative of all the help Robert has given her over the years. Relatives and friends are invited to her calling hours 4-7 Wednesday evening at the Rockefeller funeral home 165 Columbia Tpk Rensselaer. Funeral services will be Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the funeral home with burial following at Prospect hill cemetery Guilderland.
