Obituary of Rose A. Helmes

Rose Helmes 98 passed away peacefully Wednesday Jan 23, 2019 at Evergreen Commons Nursing Home. Rose (Roseann) Helmes (Nolan) born February 26, 1920 in Barrytown, New York is the daughter of the late Thomas and Sara Nolan. Rose grew up in Castleton, New York and graduated from Castleton Union School in 1938. Rose entered the United States Navy during World War II as a member of the Hospital Corps. She moved to East Greenbush in 1953 where she became a communicant of the Church of the Holy Spirit. Rose served as a lectern, a member of the church council and Rosary Society. Rose worked as a principal stenographer for the East Greenbush School District for twenty years retiring in 1983. She is the wife of the late Lester G. Helmes Rose is the mother of Cecelia Levatino (Anthony), Cynthia M. Gaige (Dennis) and Gale M. Taratus (Dennis). She is the devoted grandmother of Sean Levatino and the late Heather Levatino, Christopher, Tyler, and Nolan Gaige, and Lucas (Katie), Ryan, and Caley Taratus, and the great-grandmother of Phillipa (Pippa) Taratus and Logan Gaige. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Rose is the sister of the late Mary Kerrigan, John, Francis, and Michael Nolan. Rose was a kind hearted woman who especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Although Rose did not always understand all the rules, she looked forward to and attended most of her grandchildren's sporting events. The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Commons for the care they provided Rose over the years especially the 1 Schodack wing. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral Saturday Feb 2, 2019 9:00am visitation followed by 10:00 Mass at Church of the Holy Spirit East Greenbush. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery. Those who wish may make contributions to the Hudson Mohawk Humane Society 3 Oakland Ave Menands, NY 12204
