Honor Condit

Obituary of Honor P. Condit

Honor Patricia Condit, 99, Troy, NY, passed away on February 7, 2018, surrounded by her loving caregivers of Van Rensselaer Manor. Honor was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on December 31, 1918 to the late James and Catherine Reddington. She graduated from St. John's Hospital in New York City and began her nursing career in pediatrics care and the Red Cross. Her careers included that of a bank teller at Banker's Trust, insurance agents' coordinator with Allstate Insurance, customer service assistant for Eastern Airlines, advertising representative for artists and teacher for a YMCA Mom and Baby Swim program. She earned NYS Lifeguarding Certification. She believed that the best cure for anything was a good walk outdoors; a smile and kind word for everyone, and a positive outlook. There wasn't a baby that could resist her gentle voice and comforting rocking arms. Exercise was good for the body and soul. The "Y" became Honor's favorite place to be wherever she lived. She earned an award, at 85 years of age at the Troy YMCA as Member of the Month for her daily 5 miles on the treadmill. Honor was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, John Condit. During their years on 44th Street, New York City, one block from Times Square, the city was a source of entertainment and education for the family. Honor and John loved dancing at Roseland, visiting museums and Hayden Planetarium, going to movies and Broadway's events. She maintained "you could take the girl out of The City, but you would never take The City out of the girl". Her interests included swimming, sewing, reading, and volunteering for animal rescue. She was predeceased by her daughters, Patricia Grace Steffens and Joan Mary Hunt, and her sisters, Joan Golden and Cornelia Meres. Honor is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Brian) Fitzgerald; granddaughters Kristen (Longacker) Meek and Shannon (Charles) Farley; great-granddaughter Patricia Joan Meek and great-grandson Tyler Meek; nephews Justin, Matthew and Christopher Golden, and Lawrence Meres; great-niece, Ann Marie Meres and great-nephew, James Meres. She will be remembered fondly by caring family and friends: John and Patricia Carraway and Kenneth and Barbara Longacker. The family thanks the dedicated and professional staff of VanRensselaer Manor for their loving and compassionate care.
